The second semester of second-year studio positions design research, inquiry and production in relation to issues of "site" β expanding on the foundational knowledge acquired during the first three semesters of the undergraduate program. This semesterβs primary topics are surface, system, and section. With these themes as a backdrop, emphasis is placed on rigorous research and analysis, concept development in relation to space and form, design methodology, and design synthesis. Students will continue to engage disciplinary knowledge in several areas: precedent analysis, representation, spatial formation, and building and landscape systems.
ARC 208 studio has ten sections. Design pedagogy is coordinated, with each section taught independently. There will be a common first design project (Project 1), followed by a section-specific project (Project 2). Design-teaching within second year sections will reflect the general pedagogical intent of the undergraduate program through the specific methods and techniques of each instructor. A series of faculty presentations and design reviews will afford opportunities for students to gain exposure to a range of interests, approaches, and criticism of the ARC 208 studio faculty.
